I rode in an ambulance today!

All day!  And I had a good time! After the "exciting" start, that is.  The medic unit I was with today posts at one of the local hospitals, that is a branch of one of the main hospitals downtown.  Their main job is to transport patients from one to the other (the smaller one does not have some services the main one offers).  The first one of the day was picked up in his room, and we were on our way to the main hospital when the paramedic in the back poked her head through the window and said something to the driver I couldn't hear.  Next thing I know the lights and sirens are on full blast, and we are flying down the interstate.   We got him there okay, though, thank goodness.  The rest of the day was pretty uneventful.  Transported two more patients before they took me back to the office (I had class tonight) but they still had five more hours on their shift.  All in all I had a pretty good time.  I stayed out of their way, and they were so nice to answer all of my questions.  They were both nice people to spend a day with.

    Let's see where this goes...

Emma has decided she wants to be a vegetarian.  I was watching this week's episode of 30 Days this morning, and she came out to watch a bit with me.  In this episode, an avid hunter lives with a vegan, animal rights activist family for thirty days.  Throughout the episode, the hunter was exposed to different aspects of large corporate farms (which are hideous!), videos produced by animal rights activists, and the dark side of animal shelters.  I had seen all that before, but it was a hard thing for her to see.  Honestly, if I realized she was still in the room I probably would have turned it off for a while (she was supposed to be cleaning her room) but they didn't show anything too graphic, and I'd rather not lie to her about how things work.  Luckily we have visited a dairy so she could see from her own experience that not all food animals are treated like the episode showed.  All day she's proclaimed vegetarianism, but had ham on her pizza at lunch and couldn't resist barbecued chicken (her favourite) at dinner tonight.  If she is still determined by the next grocery day I'll get her some Boca chicken nuggets and things like that.  She is old enough to make that decision and heaven knows I'm close enough to that point myself.  She and I already eat lots of alternate protein sources so I'm not worried about that for her.  If I know her, though, next time she gets on a computer she'll research vegetarianism herself and be able to teach me things!

    AAAHHH the stress begins

Last Monday I started my new job!  I am enjoying it so far.  The past two weeks I've been in the main office, learning so many things - marketing, billing, where all the different facilities are in town.  Monday I will be at the hospital for their training.  I won't work FOR the hospital, but IN the hospital.  It will be a totally new experience for me.  The challenge of it is very exciting to me, though.

I also started school again this week.  My class meets Monday and Wednesdays, from 6-10 p.m.  This month I have business communication.  It is an interesting course, but of course very writing-heavy.  In our conversation on the way home, I mentioned to Emma that I had homework. She asked what it was, and when I told her I had to read five chapters and write a small paper for Monday's class, she said "That will be easy for you!"  Normally, she would be correct.  However, I have to find time to do my homework on top of working every day, all the housework, all the cooking, almost all the pet care, and all the mowing and yardwork.  GRRR!

I've started on my chapters, though, and have my topic for my paper.  Tomorrow morning I have a CPR class for work, but then I think I'm going to lock myself in the bedroom and get on it.

    A slice of happiness

This evening, just by pure chance, I found my favourite childhood movie just starting on HBO Family - Batteries Not Included.  I LOVED this movie when I was a little girl, and watched it over and over and over again.  Emma was in the room with me, and I told her she HAD to see this movie, and that it used to be my favourite.  She seemed a little disappointed that it wasn't a cartoon on Nickelodeon, but she didn't argue.  I was expecting her to give it ten minutes or so and declare it "boring" and go play in her room.  WRONG! She loved it as much as I used to, and got so involved in the movie she was talking back to the TV, cheering at the happy parts, gasping and yelling at the bad parts, and one of us even got almost teary at the end (we'll not mention who, ahem).  I never expected her to like it so much, since it is 21 years old, but it was such a great experience to relive that excitement with her.  We are recording the later showing so she can watch it anytime she wants.
