May 30 It's almost over... My week off is nearing the end. I had every intention of getting my house and yard back in order as the past few weeks were SO busy I was hardly ever home. So far I haven't accomplished much beyond doing some planting outside on Sunday afternoon. Monday was the holiday and we went to my parents' house, and also Emma had a friend over. She spent the night and all day with us Tuesday, going home after Girl Scouts. It was our last meeting, and we had a full house for the first time in a long time! Wednesday was not a fun day; I had my last wisdom tooth removed as it was beginning to give me some problems. Yesterday was better; I was still sore from the yanking and pulling in my mouth, and was still eating soft foods only, but we had a fun day. My parents were in the area so we met for lunch here in town. When we got home, my DVDs were in the mail!!! I won an eBay auction! I got the entire series of Jeeves and Wooster for only $32 (it retails for $100). Made a trip to the vet's office for Daisy's thyroid medicine and Charla's diabetic food, and then Emma and I went to the animal shelter to deliver the food our troop had collected for them. We got home late in the afternoon, and she and I played an improvised badminton with the boy next door. My height gave me quite an advantage over them, so I left them to play together, planted an althea bush my mom had given me, and mowed the lawn. The mom next door was cleaning out their pool after the two days of rain, so both kids ran to change into their suits. I went over to make sure Emma was invited, and I was invited too! I hadn't been in a pool in years (since Emma was 3) and I was so hot from mowing I took her up on that offer. The water was cold but after a bit it felt so good. So far today, Emma and I have watched The Game Plan again. Good movie. We haven't gotten a lot done, but you know what? Spending time together is much more important than spending the whole week cleaning like mad and letting her play alone. Might was well send her to the babysitter's if I did that. In the end, my house may not be perfect, but Emma and I are having a good time together. May 23 Gross.I look like a freakish diseased zombie. I am peeling, and with a vengance. According to my wonderfully tactful daughter (right) I could be in a horror movie but I'd "horror" myself! Such a way with words she has.
And here's the bad part - what am I going to wear to date night tonight that doesn't show off my disentigrating neck, but doesn't hurt it, either? May 22 Such a hard day Today, my baby girl graduated from elementary school. Next school year she will be in middle school. I am so not ready for that! In our county, middle school begins at 5th grade and goes through eighth grade. The fourth grade classes started off with a "parade" through the halls for the lower grades. Then there was a ceremony in the gym, with each child crossing the stage and receiving a diploma. Each class made their caps - they were so cute! After all the kids walked, the classes came together in front of the stage and sang a song, then tossed their caps in the air. The alumni association had a reception for the fourth graders and their families immediately after the graduation, with cake and punch. The principal from the middle school was there also, and we were able to meet him. He seems very nice, and very accessible also. Emma and I were able to spend the rest of the day together, and had a very nice time. We ran some errands, did some shopping, and just had a good time together. We had lunch with Chris at his office, took care of the drug screening for my new job, and visited the Girl Scout shop. I was looking for a great bag for school this summer, and finally we ended up at Kohl's. I really don't like that store, so I don't go very often. They do have good bags, though, so it was worth a shot. I found lots of different totes, but there was a really cute yellow Candies' bag with black straps. It was $25, which didn't seem so bad since the other one I liked was almost $100. It was the best one I could find, so we headed to the register. The bag rang up for only $5!! Emma got a pretty silver one also. May 20 Not a burnJust found out it's sun poisoning. Ouch.
And I'm already doing everything I can to make it better; too bad it's not working!
Although I CAN turn my head today! May 19 Burned to a crispThat is me right now. Crispy-fried, lobster-red. My neck is so bad I can't turn my head.
Saturday our Girl Scout troop had a yard sale fundraiser. We were outside from 8-3, in a blacktop pavement parking lot, with no shade. It never even occured to me to wear sunscreen until it was too late. The girls sat under the tables in their shadows when we didn't have customers, so they didn't really get burned (although Emma did get a bit on her legs and added quite a few freckles to her arms, shoulders, and top of her head). We did fairly well for a yard sale, but not nearly enough for what we needed. My husband and I are now the owners of about a dozen cases of cookies.
I was very disappointed with the lack of parent support, though. I did have one family bring tons of things to sell, but that was it. No other parents helped out by bringing items or staying to help sell. By the end of the day tempers were short, girls were having spats and hurt feelings, and we all were over it all. It was a learning experience for us, though, being the first yard sale I've ever held.
Like bring sunscreen. May 16 And now the fun begins...That job interview I had a couple weeks ago? I got it! Found out last night. I'm very excited, as it will be a job that will challenge me, which I am desperate for after being so UNchallenged for so long. Although it will be such a learning experience for me. I've never done anything like this before. But - it sounds very interesting, and has good pay and benefits. I start training June 2.
I also enrolled in school again this week! Classes start June 11, two nights a week. I can't wait! I am so close to my degree that I am getting impatient. Just get on with it already!!! May 08 Odds -n- EndsWow I can't believe how long it's been since I updated!
Saturday we travelled to Cookville, TN for our friend Damian's graduation. The trip was not so bad, less than 2 hours. We arrived early enough to get amazing seats. We were joined by my parents, Damian's parents, and his girlfriend, and also his roomate's parents. After graduation we all went to lunch together, then parted ways. I have some great pictures from that day; I will post them later.
Emma's friend Karissa spent the weekend with us again, and also was at the graduation with us. Emma has also joined the children's handbell choir at church, so Sunday morning I dropped them off before Sunday School for practice and treated myself to a cup of cappuccino before I came back for Sunday school. I think that will be my new Sunday morning routine. After Karissa's mother got off work Sunday afternoon (she works the very early shift!) she picked up both girls and they went fishing for the afternoon!
The week before last, our first early morning at church, I joined the first Sunday school class that invited me (I hadn't been since I was a kid!). I was chatting with some of the people in class and our conversation turned to our jobs. I got an interview out of that conversation! I interviewed on Monday of this week; hopefully I will hear something soon. The lady I interviewed with said it would be the end of the week. I don't know too many details yet, as the position is not a currently existing position - they are creating this one from scratch and are still in negotiations for location, salary, and things like that. I will have to see what they offer. It sounds very interesting, though.
Yesterday I had to go to the dentist - ugh. Seems like a nice man, though. He did some work for Chris last month and he was very impressed with this doctor. I have a bit of infection, so I'm on antibiotics right now to get that out of the way, then will have some work done.
School is almost out for Emma, and almost beginning for me. I start next week, and Emma's last day is May 23. Tomorrow night is the PTO carnival, which I am helping at, and this week was the Science Fair. Emma made a lemon-powered clock. Quite simple to make, actually, and really works. Her teacher said it was one of the best projects she's seen. |
