April 26 Girls' Day!My husband was out of town yesterday and today, so it was just Emma and me. Last night we watched movies. The Game Plan made us both laugh a lot; usual Disney formula - tons of fun, sad part, happy ending - but we enjoyed it. We tried watching Mr Magorium's Wonder Emporium after that, but we both fell asleep. We'll try that one again sometime. Today we had a relaxing morning (if you don't count Tucker getting us up at 6... and 7.... and 8). At noon we went to a gift store here in town for the much-anticipated (by Emma) Webkinz Extravaganza. She used the last of her birthday money and bought a pink poodle and a carrier bag for them, and received a Persian cat as her free Webbie. She now has eight of the things. Afterward, we were on our way to lunch when we noticed a sign for a local church having a children's consignment sale - half off everything today and one hour left before closing time! Since neither one of us were really hungry yet, we went to the church to see what they had. Emma came out with a new pair of dress sandals, a beautiful lacy sweater (the kind you wear over something else - can see right through it), a denim skort and coordinating shirt, a longish embellished skirt (with the original store tag still attached!), and cute satin PJs - all for $13! After all that shopping we were hungry, so back to Quizno's. We looked in a couple more stores adjoining Quizno's after we ate, then picked up one of her best friends. On the way back to town we decided to stop at an antique mall I'd always known about but never had the chance to visit. Emma found a Care Bear she wanted, Karissa got a stuffed bulldog, I got a pretty teacup and saucer for an upcoming tea I'll be going to, and I also found something neat - a trivet put out by our church in 1972! It has a drawing of the church on a white tile. Chris also made out like a bandit - he called right before we were leaving, and I told him about the Star Wars glasses and Hamilton Collection plates I found. I left with them all. At six was a dance for the Girl Scouts in our area. We picked up two other girls to go with us. They all had a good time. Although, after two weeks of excitement and practicing dancing with Karissa, Emma would not get out there and do anything! I gave her my camera to take pictures, though, and she came out of her shell immediately. We had dinner provided, there were crafts and games, and of course the dancing. After the dance and after we dropped off the other two girls, I took the girls to Sonic for ice cream. Nice end to a nice day. April 20 A nice weekend This has been a nice weekend. Yesterday our church had a Ladies' Tea, and Emma had been asked to perform a part in a skit for the tea. It was titled "Are you there God? It's Me, Molly." It showed the prayers of Molly from young elementary school through her last years. Emma played middle school Molly. She did a great job! My mother came and went to the tea with us, and we had a nice girls' day together. We don't get many girls' days lately so we really enjoyed this. After the tea, Emma had to stay in her room until it was clean. She actually got the entire thing clean in time to play outside with the boy next door and another neighborhood boy. We played in the backyard with the dogs for a while, too. They fetched so much they collapsed in sleep when they came inside! This morning was church. After church and lunch I let Emma play Sims 2 on my computer while I prepared Tuesday's Girl Scout meeting and cleaned out my car. Tuesday is Earth Day so we are having an Earth Day themed meeting. I also very thoroughly cleaned my car! All it needs now is vacuuming.... maybe someday I'll get that far! About 5:30 this evening we loaded up Emma's bike in the truck and went to the park again. It really is a fun thing to do, and we all three get exercise. Chris and I walked a mile on the trail again, and she rode it at least twice. We learned from last time, though, and took bottles of water with us this time. Tonight for dinner I'm making something I haven't made in years. We have a wok we used to use all the time, but have forgotten lately. I got broccoli, mushrooms, and beef at the store, and I already have scallops and carrots here. I'll stir-fry all those and cook some brown rice. Yum! April 17 Seriously, people?? A lapel pin?? Really?? With all the issues - the economy, the war, the outrageous gas prices, housing issues, etc - do we really want to waste time in a political debate on whether or not a candidate wears a lapel pin of the flag?? Come on! Is it really that important? April 14 It's birthday time!Last Thursday was Emma's tenth birthday. Oh my. I have a hard time sometimes realizing she is so old! I don't feel old enough to have a 10 year old! Even worse, she starts middle school next year.
Anyway...
Wednesday night after she went to bed I made cupcakes and hid them in my car. I left work at noon and took them to her school for her class. She was so surprised! I signed her out of school early, and we went to the park, to Sonic for drinks, and the library. After the library she still wasn't ready to go home, so we looked in some of the antique shops downtown. I finally talked her into going home, and she read her school work that she missed. When my husband got home he asked her where she wanted to go for her birthday dinner. Applebees! So off we went. We had a very good time, and even got dessert (although I ended up accidentally dumping a portion of her milkshake onto her lap - and she was wearing shorts!). After dinner, it was getting late so home to shower and go to bed. She did get a small present in her birthday card, though - Sims 2 for her Nintendo DS!
Saturday was her party (I will get pictures up soon) at the same bowling alley as last year. They really do have a good party package for a reasonable price. We had a total of eleven kids there and several adults. She got lots of presents, but was surprised speechless when her daddy rolled out a brand new bicycle for her! It is even blue, her favourite colour.
She also got a bit of money for her birthday, and a WalMart gift card. She has been wanting a new mp3 player for a long time (hers disappeared when Chris traded in his old vehicle in September - we're thinking it was left in there) so we ventured to WalMart on the way home. She had enough to get an iPod shuffle - also in blue! She's really wanted an iPod for ages - this one may be tiny, but she's ecstatic with it! We put it on to charge when we got home, and I spent the evening downloading music from my laptop onto her iPod for her.
Also Saturday evening, she and B, the boy next door, wanted to go to the park to ride their bikes. We put them both in the back of the truck and the kids in the back seat, and off we went! The park near our house has an amazing greenbelt -complete with mile markers! Chris and I walked a mile and a half, while the kids rode the mile section twice and the same half mile we walked. They went home worn out!
Sunday was dinner with my parents. It was a hard day for my mother, as Sunday would have been Mema's 90th birthday. Emma chose the entire menu; we had meatloaf, mashed potatoes, lefse, corn, cheese biscuits, and banana pudding. Yum! We all ate until we were stuffed. She also had taken her bike there, and had to show off how well she could ride. We are definitely finding her helmet soon. I get a little nervous watching! April 08 This is ridiculous!I heard a news story yesterday about a lady who was bitten by her neighbor's dog. The event in itself isn't what stood out, though. What gets me is that the lady went into her neighbor's fenced in yard uninvited, and that is how she was bitten. The main consensus is that the dog was protecting her three week old puppies and was more aggressive than usual. The dog and her puppies were taken away until the mother's rabies shots were verified, and the owners are not being charged with anything since they had "Beware of Dog" signs posted and the neighbor came into their yard. The part that REALLY makes me mad, though, was the bitten lady's comment on the news - she doesn't blame the dog, but the owners. "We have a leash law here in this county and their dog should have been put up!" Hello!! It was in their fenced in yard! Behind a locked gate!!! That is not a violation of any leash laws! Leash laws say dogs have to be on a leash if they are loose outside - as in not running free. Stupid woman! April 02 What timingI just thought of a perfect April Fool's prank for this, but it's a day late.
Oh well, now I have an idea for next year! |
